The article examines research on breakaway organizations. The research suggests that developing breakaway organizations follow a consistent pattern of events culminating in the formation of new startup organizations. Patterns of escalation commonly discovered in research indicated six distinct stages and five connecting trigger events that accounted for group exits in organizations. The stages and events observed are examined and applicable management lessons are considered, such as managerial sensitivity to latent faultlines within an organization.
