Abstract

Executive OverviewIn March 2002 YTL Corporation made business headlines in the Western media when it acquired successful British utility Wessex Water against impressive competition with a £ 1.2 billion bid. Although comparatively unknown outside Malaysia, the company is a local success story whose sustained growth and profitability reflect the skills and values of three generations of the Yeoh family. Yeoh Cheng Liam founded a timber business in the 1920s, and his son, Yeoh Tiong Lay (whose initials form the company name) expanded into construction of army housing, schools, and commercial buildings as Malaysia modernized during the 1960s. By the 1980s, the company was designing, raising capital for, and building hospitals, universities, residential properties, high-rise office buildings, industrial facilities, and other infrastructure projects. In 1993 it became the first independent power producer (IPP) in Malaysia. Tiong Lay's eldest son, Francis Yeoh, completed a civil engineering Honours degree in England. On his return to Malaysia in 1978, he was given responsibility for day-to-day management of the firm—at the young age of 24. He has overseen the growth of YTL into a major conglomerate with significant business in six core areas: construction contracting, power generation, cement manufacturing, property development, hotel development and management, and IT and e-commerce. Three subsidiaries, in addition to the parent corporation, are now listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and have a combined market capitalization of almost $5 billion. YTL Corporation has also had a secondary listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange since 1996. A technology subsidiary, YTL e-Solutions Berhad, was listed on the Malaysian MESDAQ market in July 2002. YTL has gained a reputation for the quality and innovativeness of its financial management (a characteristic that enabled the firm to remain profitable during the 1997 Asian economic crisis) as much as for its ability to deliver successful projects in record time. Jeffrey C. Kennedy compiled the material for this “interview” from Francis Yeoh's speeches and reports, made available by YTL Corporation, in particular a speech by Yeoh to the Siemems Global Power Generation Symposium, 2002.
