There is a widespread neglect in social psychology of the work of Sigmund Freud. The paper provides a systematic overview of his writings on "civilization." Along the way, Freud's critical engagement with Gustave Le Bon's The Crowd is detailed. It is suggested that analyses of collectivities ignore Freud's contribution to their detriment.
