Abstract

Executive Overview Several years have passed since the demise of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. Considerable attention has been given in the popular press to the struggles these countries are facing in the transition to a market economy. The continuing problems of Russia and the success of the Czech Republic are old news. Most recently, the tragic chaos in Albania is in the headlines. Until the spring of 1997, this poor little Balkan country and a few of its privatized enterprises, such as Bora, were successfully making the economic transition. Although the recent events in Albania point out the complex, harsh realities that countries face in making social, political, and economic transformations simultaneously, there are some important lessons that can be learned from the economic progress that was being made. By providing a brief overview of Albania and a case analysis of the Bora Company, we are able to show the importance of starting over and new thinking at both the country and enterprise levels of the transformation to a market economy.
