Abstract

The article discusses a management failure during the U.S. government“s response to Hurricane Katrina, then comments on how scholars can make themselves more relevant to matters of public concern. Those responsible for arranging evacuations during Katrina failed to take into account victims” attachments to their pets. As a result, many animals were abandoned and wound up in overcrowded shelters. In the case of animal welfare, managers can help by contributing their skills to such organizations at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
