Corporate Enterpreneurs in the People's Republic of China: Problems Encountere and Respective Solutions

WAI-SUM SIU IS A LECTURER IN THE department of marketing at the Hong Kong Baptist College School of Business. This exploratory study describes an attempt to depict contemporary socialist entrepreneurs in the People's Republic of China and a definition for the PRC's socialist entrepreneur has been constructed. Personal documents, one type of ethnographic approach, has been adopted as the data collection instrument. Ideologies, problems encountered, respective solutions and success factors of the Chinese corporate entrepreneurs are identified and discussed. The author found, for example, that such entrepreneurs considered working hard, loyalty to the Party, strong determination and innovation as their success factors. They placed the development and advancement of their country as a high priority and placed less emphasis on their individual wealth. Further research directions are suggested to gain a deeper understanding of the actions, meanings and intentions of China's socialist entrepreneurs.
