The Poverty of Nation
本书将世界国家分为五类,分析各类国家中贫困的普遍性,并分别探讨工业化国家的衰退、前苏联集团的转型、亚洲老虎的资本形成以及新兴和停滞经济体的结构调整与政策。
This book begins by classifying the countries of the world into five categories (industrialised; ex‐Soviet bloc; the Asian tigers (Korea, Indonesia); emerging economies (Brazil, China and India); and stagnating economies (Nigeria, Ethiopia). It then observes that poverty is endemic – none of the countries in the various categories is able to entirely escape poverty. The central purpose of this book flows from this observation and this is to ‘analyse world trends in economic growth' by selecting and studying four or five representative nations from each of the above five categories. The focus of analysis differs according to the different categories. For the industrialised world, the emphasis is on recessions and the slow‐down in growth; for the ex‐Soviet bloc countries, it is the transition to market economies that is emphasised; the emphasis on capital formation is of interest to the Asian tigers; and structural adjustments and policies to break free of stagnation are, respectively, of interest to countries in the fourth and fifth categories. After a general discussion, in Part 1, of the relation between the emergence of the market economy and poverty, the author turns to specifics in Part 2.
