This anthology was originally intended to be a Festschrift, based on a conference to be held at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, to mark George Shackle's ninetieth birthday on the 14 July 1993. Sadly, that was not to take place: he died on 3 March 1992. The title of that conference was chosen by Shackle himself and it is fitting that it has been retained for this substitute collection of In Memoriam essays. For the title epitomises his distinctive, many would say idiosyncratic, view of the nature of economics and of the methodologies it should adopt. The editors have endeavoured to guide authors so that the essays relate in some way to the broad themes that Shackle pursued. Several are related to aspects of epistemics, though not necessarily to Shacklean themes; others illustrate applications of Shackle's own theory of decision making and consider his objections against probability as a measure of uncertainty. The link between his work and that of the Post Keynesians is the subject of one essay and that between his work and the Austrian School is touched on in others. The penultimate essay is based on the collection of Shackle's correspondence and papers housed in the Library of the University of Cambridge. This is followed by a paper by Kathleen Cann of the latter's Manuscript Department in which she provides details of that substantial collection. There is comparatively little coverage of monetary/macroeconomics and the history of economic theory, on which Shackle wrote extensively. However, we must keep in mind the nature of this collection.
