Research Note: The Impact of Home-Based Business on Family Life

Because family firms often unknowingly take on the roles, dynamics, and values of the family unit in which they began, it is useful to study businesses that began in, or are being run from, the home environment. This article examines a subset of cases drawn from a data base on home-based employment in nine stages. The study sought to ascertain the extent to which the functioning of the family and that of the business are intertwined. Results from this subsample indicate that there are measurable family and business variables that can help researchers and practitioners understand the interactive effects of family and business life.
