The article reports on a study pertaining to the relationship between strong corporate culture and firm performance. Researchers discovered that companies with strong cultures had better and more reliable financial performance than firms with weaker cultures. As industry volatility increased the “reliability advantage” of firms with stronger cultures decreased and eventually became nonexistent. The implication is that having a consensus about company goals and values provides the biggest benefit when environments are stable.
