Abstract

In recent years there has been a fall in the numbers of United Kingdom students entering PhD programmes in Economics. This is likely to be important for the future of the discipline, both as an academic subject and in terms of the subject's outside influence (especially in using academic research to inform government thinking and policy). Understanding why it has happened, and determining whether it is likely to be associated with problems in replenishing the stock of academic economists, is the concern of this paper.' The paper tries to establish the reasons for the sharp decline in registration on PhD programmes. It first examines pay structures, the employment destinations of young economists, and universities' problems of recruitment. The discussion then turns to what might be done, and what these developments mean for the future of economics, as an academic discipline, in the United Kingdom. It is useful to begin with some illustrative facts.
