Abstract

The article discusses the establishment of stretch-goal initiatives at General Electric (GE) and Goldman Sachs (GS) and presents a comparative study based on their differing goals and industries. The article first discusses GE's program to enhance organizational effectiveness. GE's focus on intraorganizational cooperation is highlighted, as well as how they established metrics and handled failure. At GS, the overall goal was different. GS was looking for improvement in professional development. Therefore, the goals were developed through personal action plans with stretch goals developed individually (vertically) and by department (horizontally). Further discussion of the nature of these initiatives and the support structure necessary for success are presented.
