Single equation demand estimation

Whereas economic theory suggests that the demand for a product is a function of all prices and income, in empirical analysis researchers frequently specify an estimating equation in which own price appears as the only price variable. 1 While this approach has the advantage of computational convenience, it does impose rather severe restrictions on the parameter estimates, if the estimated equation is to conform to the principles of neoclassical demand theory. This note attempts to illustrate this point.
