Abstract

This paper provides estimates of participation and expenditure in the market for food away from home (FAFH) in Greece using data from the 1993--1994 Household Budget Survey. Statistical tests indicate that the appropriate vehicle for analysing Greek household FAFH consumption is the double-hurdle participation model, adjusted for non-normality and heteroscedasticity. Participation in the FAFH market is found to be determined by household income, household size and place of residence. The level of FAFH expenditure is also affected by certain characteristics of the meal planner (age, education, marital and employment status). Given current socio-demographic trends, FAFH consumption in Greece is likely to increase. Copyright 2001, Oxford University Press.
