Identifying the Valuation Effects and Agency Costs of Corporate Diversification: Evidence from the Geographic Diversification of U.S. Banks
利用美国州际银行放松管制的动态过程作为识别策略,发现银行控股公司资产的地理多元化外生增加降低了市场估值,同时增加了内部人贷款并降低了贷款质量,支持了地理多元化加剧代理问题的理论。
This paper assesses the impact of the geographic diversification of bank holding company (BHC) assets across the United States on their market valuations. Using two new identification strategies based on the dynamic process of interstate bank deregulation, we find that exogenous increases in geographic diversity reduced BHC valuations. We also find that the geographic diversification of BHC assets increased insider lending and reduced loan quality. Taken together, these findings are consistent with theories predicting that geographic diversity intensifies agency problems. The Author 2013.
