Public Management Needs Help!

The author discusses the state of public management in the U.S. in 2005, and suggests two improvements. First, the relatively small cohort of scholars active in studying public administration need to connect to the broader world of mainstream organization theory. In reciprocal fashion, scholars in the organization theory/behavior communities need to exert more effort towards public organizations and public problems. The author further asserts the need for public management researchers to teach those involved in more mainstream, organizational research the legitimacy of prescriptive research.
