Limits in Generalization from Psychological Research to Performance Appraisal Processes

Most attempts to understand the performance appraisal process have borrowed from social psychology. It is argued here that the experimental methods of social psychological research may not be well suited to the study of particular issues in performance appraisal. Several of the methods used in the basic literature are outlined, and the relevance of these methods for the study of performance appraisal is discussed.
