The 27 papers reproduced in this volume, all authored or co-authored by Alok Bhargava, define the multidisciplinary space within which he has researched and published for nearly a quarter of a century. They originally appeared in journals catering to a variety of disciplines: economics and econometrics, statistics, biology, medicine, nutrition, psychology and anthropology. This selection of the author's output documents his sustained commitment to synthesising econometric analysis and biomedical knowledge in order to provide new and policy-relevant insights in the related fields of food choice, nutrition and health. Despite the diversity of the specific questions addressed, the papers share two characteristics. First, there is a meticulous concern for rigorous quantitative analysis and statistical interpretation, nowhere more so than in the four ‘Methodological contributions’ with which the compilation begins. These four papers address various problems (including parameter identification, endogenous regressors and mis-specification tests) encountered when specifying and estimating dynamic models for panel data sets that are restricted in the time dimension. Second, the applied studies that follow are all driven by a desire to shed light on the causal mechanisms underlying various urgent food and health problems, particularly in the developing world, in a way that can contribute to the policy debate and lead to more effective policy interventions.
