Export Behaviour of Small Firms in Singapore

Dr. Wong Kwei Chong is an associate professor in the School of Management, National Universityof Singapore. Kwan Wai Chong, a recent graduate of the School of Management, is now an administrative officer with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. The authors have examined the export behaviour of small firms in Singapore by making a survey of 400 furniture and 200 electronics firms. The differences between exporters and non-exporters in the two industry groups were investigated. They were compared on demographic characteristics, export supporting activities and problems encountered in exporting. They examined the characteristics which accounted for the export propensity of firms and finally a profile of exporters was developed using the results.
