Littlefield and Randolph (Littlefield, T. K., Jr., P. H. Randolph. 1987. Another note on PERT times. Management Sci. 33 1357–1359.) present the historical derivation of the PERT equations. A second derivation is possible, however, using a different set of assumptions.
