Defining and determining a ‘fair’ standard of living for the farm family

In this paper, the question of defining and determining a ‘fair’ standard of living for the farm family is reviewed and discussed. It is recognised that there are serious difficulties in specifying such a level of living. However, it appears that it is feasible at least to specify and determine a minimum acceptable standard of living based on the average expenditure criterion. Policy implications of this subject are discussed.
