The article discusses research on executive succession which found that incumbent chief executive officers (CEOs) are highly influential in the process of power transfer. The author speculates that CEOs maneuver to avoid the loss of influence, prestige, and money that comes with stepping down while they are still in a position of power. A strong CEO will typically reduce the likelihood of an heir apparent moving up into their position. Poorly performing firms, however, are less likely to lose an heir apparent when the CEO is in a position of great power and assuming responsibility.
