A Statistical Approach to a Deterioration Process in Reinforced Concrete

SUMMARY The use of reinforced concrete in building structures is widespread but certain problems of deterioration and corrosion of the materials are still not well understood. In studying the problems the building industry has collected data, though not as yet in any comprehensive and systematic way, and some conclusions have been drawn. This paper suggests an approach to the analysis of data on carbonation, the progressive loss of alkalinity of concrete over time when exposed to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, in relation to cover depth, the distance below the surface of the steel reinforcement. The methodology is applied to some data from a current study.
