Software article: analysis of the Oracle-based epilepsy database with SAS® enterprise guide software

In the presurgical epilepsy diagnosis , Department of Pediatrics, University of Heidelberg, a bulk of data is gathered for clinical and scientific purposes on an Oracle based epilepsy database. In order to enable the diverse data analysis, the SAS® Enterprise Guide 1.3 is applied to the SAS® 8.2 software. In the unit for presurgical epilepsy diagnosis in the Department of Pediatric Neurology, University of Heidelberg, an Oracle based epilepsy database was developed as part of a project, to serve as a register of the complex and diverse diagnostic data. The SQL steps required to the analysis couldn't be transposed due to the complexity and flexibility called for. For the evaluation of the Heidelberg epilepsy database the required SAS tables are initially generated from the Oracle database as part of a batch routine process running in the background. Then the SAS Enterprise Guide is started, the required analysis (estimation of standard values and correlations, distribution verifications etc) is run through and the results are given out in RTF, PDF or HTML format.The intuitive user interface of the SAS® Enterprise Guide makes the epilepsy database analysis accessible to users with no experience in SAS i.e. SQL programming. The SAS® Enterprise Guide is called upon by a mouse click on loading the Oracle database and this could motivate users from other epilepsy centres to use the epilepsy database developed at the Department of Pediatrics for their own scientific purposes.
