Abstract

The article examines the role of management in promoting and increasing employee engagement. Research indicating that only a minority of U.S. employees are fully committed to their job performance is cited. Blue ocean leadership, a management style in which executives focus on actions they need to undertake to increase employee motivation, is considered. Its implementation in an unnamed retail industry firm is examined, including research on executives and middle managers in which their existing leadership is examined, the creation of alternative leadership modes by those executives and middle managers acting in teams and employee participation in creation of management objectives.
