Abstract: Some critics of strategic planning say that it is a fading management fad. The author of this article says that strategic planning is still a viable tool. When done well, strategic planning leads to strategic management. Strategic management uses strategic thinking and strategic planning to run a business and control operations. Six methods to increase productivity and performance are: involve line managers; define the business unit; move beyond general goals; make more detailed action plans; manage the face off; and integrate plans and controls. The author concludes that in the most effective companies he has observed, strategic planning is not an extra managerial duty, but a way of thinking.(mp)
