Fluid, Fractured, and Distinctive? In Search of a Definition of Organizational Identity

The article presents a commentary on this special edition of “Academy of Management Journal” by two of the authors of one of the articles. The authors take issue with the contention by some that organizational identity is fluid and unstable. Instead, they argue that identity shifts are not fluid, but sticky. They discuss the evidence of this stickiness in the articles of this journal. Further, the authors address change through self-reflection, wise organizations, and those professionals who can help organizations “fix” their identity. The authors argue that identity rests heavily with the self-image of organizational leadership and stakeholders.
