Commercial fishing remains important to employment and wealth creation in peripheral regions, yet fishermen currently face a range of administrative, socio-economic and environmental challenges that affect the viability of their profession. One response to these challenges is to diversify into activities that maintain a link with fishing but which are not subject to restrictions on fishing effort and output. This paper explores diversification among inshore fishermen in the English Channel and proposes a conceptual framework to understand this strategy. The findings indicate that fishermen will typically seek to adapt their fishing behaviour before considering diversification, and some will resist diversification altogether due to economic and sociocultural constraints.
