Abstract

In this thought-provoking book, editors Margaret Blair and Thomas Kochan, in the book “The New Relationship: Human Capital in the American Corporation,” raise challenging questions about the changes that are taking place in employment relationships and in the organization of the corporate sector. In the introduction to their edited volume, they present the reader with a paradox. Based on this paradox, the editors ask the following questions that should engage researchers for years to come. Are the changes in the source of value creation and in employment relationships consistent with each other in ways that we do not currently understand? Are these changes responsible for the strong overall performance of the economy? Or, is the economy performing well despite these changes? Finally, are these changes related to the continuing pressure on low-income workers? The editors provide eight essays in the book to address the different aspects of the questions they pose.
