Abstract

In late 1975 Ajit Singh, Bob Rowthorn, Frank Wilkinson and John Eatwell held a number of dinner meetings at a restaurant called La Garçonne (now long closed) in Mill Road, Cambridge. For the first time since 1912 the Economic Journal would not have a Cambridge editor and it was feared that the scope of that journal would narrow, particularly with respect to the publication of less orthodox material. It was decided to attempt to found a new journal in Cambridge. A search for funding was initially unsuccessful (though Piero Sraffa offered to help “so long as the new journal is not respectable”). Eventually, Emily Wilkinson of Academic Press came to the rescue as publisher. Hence the Cambridge Journal of Economics was born, the first issue appearing in March 1977. Ajit Singh, who died on 23 rd June 2015, aged 74, was the key originator of the endeavour, as he was of so much of what was progressive in Cambridge economics over fifty years.
