Anticipating pain is worse than feeling it
An interview is presented with behavioral economist Giles Story. Story discusses his research in which a majority of subjects chose to receive a mildly painful electric shock immediately rather than wait for a less painful one. He says that finding contradicts the theory of temporal discounting which says persons place lower values on future outcomes. Story says a follow-up study in which persons were asked to schedule a dental appointment confirmed his initial results.
