Abstract

The Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujaahidiin (the Movement for Youth Jihadists), a militant organization based in Somalia, has long attracted Western observers of security and terrorism, and featured in policy leaflets and intelligence reports. Previously, these were the only available sources for those wishing to understand the group. Hansen's work is the first book-length study that attempts to go beyond this type of security analysis. The author sets out to both localize and globalize the group by detailing its emergence and evolution. Al-Shabaab morphed from a mere network into an organization, with Afghan jihad alumni assuming a leading role from the outset. The name ‘Al-Shabaab’ was first heard in the summer of 2006, when Hansen was in Mogadishu carrying out fieldwork that included interviewing members of the Islamic Courts Union that ruled most of southern Somalia from June to December 2006; Al-Shabaab was assumed to be its military wing. Though the author regards them as interlinked, Al-Shabaab was previously a military brigade within Al-Itihad Al-Islami, a now defunct Islamist organization.
