Assessing the Teaching Demands of a Given School Curriculum: The Curriculum Entry Theory

This paper introduces a simple formula for assessing the numbers of teachers required when pupils are allowed choice between subjects. The basic formula is a large sample result and does not depend on making any strong assumptions about the subject preferences of pupils. The small sample behaviour of the formula is investigated, and simulation results are used to illustrate that the formula will normally give a reasonable estimate of the teaching input required when pupil numbers are above a particular threshold. The results implied by the formula are also compared with data from a sample of schools.
