Abstract

Much of the research in marketing geography has focused on analyzing consumers' perceptions and cognitions of shopping centers. Relatively few studies, however, have examined the role of cognition from the entrepreneurial perspective. This paper investigates the use of multidimensional analytical techniques for evaluating how entrepreneurs cognize their retail environments. Using data collected from four retail centers in the state of Victoria, Australia, it was found that entrepreneurs cognize a broad spectrum of shopping center attributes, and that the four environments are quite different with regard to evaluations of these characteristics. It is suggested that these results may have important implications for planning and policy making purposes related to different retail environments.
