In this important book, Maarten Hajer analyzes a central challenge of governance in contemporary society: How public leaders can act authoritatively in the midst of an increasingly complex world characterized by the "mediatization" of politics, network governance, and "multiplicities" in which politics is conducted at multiple sites, relating to a multiplicity of publics, and communicated through a multiplicity of media.Mediatization refers to the entanglement of politics and media, where "governance, along with a host of related processes such as opinion formation, could not occur in their present forms without various uses of media" (37, quoting Bennett and Entman 2001, 1).As an exemplar of an argumentative approach to analysis in public administration and policy (Fischer and Gottweis 2012), Hajer questions, I am glad to accept the hand that these authors generously extend and to explore this terrain of intellectual pluralism together.
