Statistical Challenges in the Environmental Sciences: A Personal View

SUMMARY The environmental sciences provide a continuing source of challenging statistical problems, with which too few statisticians are concerned. The paper surveys a few of these, many concerning matters of social concern, e.g. pests, resource exploitation, floods and land use. Most are typified by heterogeneous spatial variation. It is argued that neither deterministic nor aspatial models are ultimately satisfactory.
