Insurance Pedagogy: Executive Opinions and Priorities

This paper assists insurance professors to obtain a clearer perception of the needs of their students from the perspective of insurance company executives. Through survey research, executives from 40 large life-health insurers and 40 large property-liability insurers evaluated the relative importance of 14 topics. The study concludes that (1) industry leaders place a priority on certain topics that may be unfamiliar to many traditional insurance faculty members and (2) faculty members with both traditional institutional insights and a basic knowledge of financial economics are in an optimum position to provide valuable coverage of the survey topics.
