Abstract

This paper examines the geography of Japanese motor industry investments in Western Europe, including the U.K. The basic framework for the analysis is provided by the changing technology and organization of car production, but the relevance of political factors influencing the scale, location and composition of investments is also stressed. At the macroscale, Japanese investments focus on the U.K., which has, for essentially political and cultural reasons, become an “offshore car production platform.” At the mesoscale, within the U.K., Japanese firms have chosen “non- traditional” sites in terms of labor supply for their major transplants, which enables new production practices to be utilized more readily. In all cases, however, the final site selection reflects the input of behavioral factors.
