Managing the Public's Business: Are Private Sector Skills Appropriate?

Because the management of public organizations is fundamentally different from private management, appointing businessmen to lead government agencies is not the solution to governmental incompetence. The business community can contribute to better public management, however, by encouraging leading business schools to undertake comparative research and curriculum development concerning the general management of different kinds of organizations. Without compromising their traditional missions, these schools can help foster greater appreciation of the need for better management throughout society and better communications between the business community and other sectors.
