Abstract

The article presents an overview of the status of the discipline of management science. There are indications the field is thriving. Membership in the Academy of Management has nearly doubled from 1998-2007. Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degrees granted have more than tripled from 1975-2000, and books on management-related topics have enjoyed significant commercial success. At the same time, however, there are concerns that the effort by management scientists to have their discipline accorded full academic legitimacy as one of the social sciences has resulted in their work having less real world application than is desirable. A worrisome sign is that large corporations in the financial services industry and other fields are less likely to send employees to business school to acquire MBAs than they were as recently as 2002. Management science must have the confidence in its own academic status to embrace its inescapable relationship with actual management and use that to its best advantage.
