Abstract

The purpose of Developing Managers, as stated in the preface, is to managers gain greater awareness of their career motivation, consider ways to enhance that motivation, and understand how to affect the work environment to expand their chances for a satisfying career. It is also designed to help supervisors and personnel professionals understand how their behavior and the organization's practices and procedures affect managers' career (p. ix). The author attempts to accomplish these goals by identifying three domains of career motivation: career resilience, motivation to keep going in the face of barriers and adversity; career insight, extent of realistic perceptions of oneself and one's career; and career identity, the extent to which one defines himor herself by his or her work. London discusses the interrelationships among these domains and gives suggestions on how individuals can assess their own career motivation and how organizations can enhance the career motivation of their employees. His discussion is supported with data from a specialized assessment center for new managers in two different organizations. The organizations are compared and contrasted, and brief case histories of individuals are presented throughout the book.
