Abstract

For an intensely technical subject in need of exposition, sources of written material on property/casualty loss reserving are relatively scarce. Much of the existing literature does little to unravel the mysteries of loss reserving to anyone but an elite group of mathematicians, the property/casualty insurance actuaries. Loss Reserving Property/Casualty Insurance attempts to synthesize the disciplines involved in loss reserving. The book is necessarily written from the point of view of accountants, and in accounting language. Without being apologetic, this comment should serve as a warning to actuaries that the mathematical concepts presented may be somewhat cumbersome and lacking in the short-hand convenient to them. The book was designed to be of value to the widest possible audience. Conceptually, loss reserves and loss estimations are relatively straightforward. The difficulties in the estimation process give rise to most of the content of this book. No two insurers undertake this estimation process in the same way. They differ as to the assignment of responsibilities, the nature and flexibility of the data base, the estimation techniques used, and the underlying philosophy of reserve adequacy. Therefore, the reserving process cannot be catalogued within an inventory of methods and techniques. Rather, the reserving process must be explained in terms of hundreds of considerations, each of which can vary in significance when applied to a specific situation. While suggestions are rampant throughout the book, few are presented as absolute dogma. Loss reserving is a far too eclectic process to be subjected to a neat set of procedures that are fail safe.
