In 1977 McGuire painted a grim scenario of encroaching egalitarianism based on the ideas of John Rawls. However, Rawlsian egalitarianism, newly considered, justifies inequalities that work to the advantage of the least well-off, approves paternalism under certain conditions, and defends individual dignity and self-esteem as meaningful contributions to business organizations.
