Statistics Degree Courses
本文讨论了统计学在数学学位课程中的优势地位,包括必修与选修课程设置、联合荣誉学位及模块化项目的影响,并分析了将统计学保留在数学科学框架内的理由。
Statistics has a somewhat favoured position within degree level mathematics. It is fully integrated into most Honours degrees with compulsory courses in the first two years and a wide range of third-year options. Its position is reinforced through the offer of mathematics with or and statistics. Full statistics degrees are not so prevalent but several are available, typically where there is a statistics department or division with a reasonable amount of autonomy. Statistics has also benefited from the spread of Joint Honours and modular programmes. An attractive model is for there to be a 'School of Mathematical Sciences' with a common intake and fairly flexible streams. There are strong reasons to retain the position of statistics under a mathematical sciences umbrella. These go further than the obviously strong mathematical basis of the subject. The nature of pure and applied mathematics is changing in broadly the same direction as statistics and there is no special reason to single out statistics. Here are some directions:
