In Key Concepts in Economic Geography, Aoyama, Murphy and Hanson—all based at Clark University—offer a comprehensive textbook that provides an overview of economic geography from its origins to the present. The goal of the work is to provide reflections upon old ideas and demonstrate how well-worn concepts, such as labor, regional disparity, embeddedness and circuits of value, are indeed relevant to contemporary debates; suggesting that what often appears as a new concept in economic geography may actually have a long, intellectual tradition within this subfield. In tackling this challenge, the authors have selected 23 key concepts as points of departure, concepts which have been significant over an extended period of time and are still relevant today. These concepts are categorized into six sections: (1) Key Agents in Economic Geography; (2) Key Drivers in Economic Change; (3) Industries and Regions in Economic Geography; (4) Global Economic Geographies; (5) Socio-Cultural Contexts of Economic Change; and (6) Emerging Themes in Economic Geography. The sections may be read in the order in which they are presented, or the reader may simply select individual sections which pertain to their specialized interests.
