A Note on the Equivalence of Several Marginal Homogeneity Test Criteria for Categorical Data

Summary The data from repeated measurement studies involving d individuals in each of n matched sets or d separate determinations on each of n individuals can be summarized in an Ld contingency table for a polytomous response variable. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the equivalence of several test criteria for investigating the hypothesis of marginal homogeneity in such situations. This statistic, denoted as Q, utilizes expected values and covariances from the multivariate hypergeometric distribution for each of the n: (d x L) subtables corresponding to the n matched sets. Consequently, Q and various additive partitions of Q can be generated quite readily within the scope of a computer program which implements the generalized Cochran/Mantel-Haenszel procedure.. These results are illustrated within the context of a familiar data set.
