Abstract

The increasing popularity of E-shopping or on-line shopping is changing not only the conventional way of shopping: store-shopping, but also individuals’ daily activity space. In attempt to fill in a gap in the Chinese literature of retailing geography, this study analyzes the patterns and characteristics of e-shopping from a geographical perspective. The article is based on a survey of on-line shopping behavior of Shenzhen residents conducted from November 2007 to January 2008. They, analyze and compare the e-shopping behavior of individuals of different districts in terms of frequencies, expenditures and types of goods purchased. The results show that Shenzhen residents have a high level of acceptance of on-line shopping. Nevertheless, the data also reveal that Shenzhen residents are not yet frequent on-line shoppers and the amount of money they spend is also not much. On the other hand, the types of goods purchased seem to be quite different between different on-line shoppers. Distance from shopping centers in the physical environment appears to be an important explanatory factor of frequencies, expenditures and motivations of e-shopping. The findings of this study suggest that e-shopping is yet to seriously challenge the conventional way of store-shopping and geography does seem to matter for e-shopping.
