Effects of XI'AN Expo Preparations on XI'AN Urban Ecological Footprint

This paper adds an environmental pollution account to the traditional ecological footprint model and establishes a modified ecological footprint model.It calculates the ecological footprint( EF) of Xi'an from 1999 to 2009 with this modified model.Using the successful declaration of International Horticultural Expo 2011 XI'AN CHINA as a cutting point,the paper analyzes the changes of ecological footprint.Then,a document analysis is used to test the relationship between the Expo preparation and this change.The results are:( 1) The EF of Xi'an from 0.7819hm2/ cap in 1999 rose to 1.6293 hm2/ cap in 2009.The EF average annual growth of 12.39% in 1999 ~ 2005,while 1.84% in 2006 ~ 2009,indicates that preparations of Expo 2011 XI'AN has a positive effect on reduce per capita EF in Xi'an.Further analysis found that preparations for Expo 2011 XI'AN have a positive impact on the water area footprint,pasture land footprint and fossil land footprint,and have not outstanding impact on arable land footprint and build-up land footprint,while has negative impact on forest land footprint.( 2) The per capita ecological capacity( EC) presents negative growth,the EC average annual growth of-1.78% in 1999 ~ 2005,while 3% in 2006 ~ 2009,indicates that preparations of Expo 2011 XI'AN has a positive effect on Xi'an promote EC.( 3) The per capita ecological deficit( ED) average annual growth of 22.65% in 1999 ~ 2005,while 1.56% in 2006 ~ 2009,indicates that preparations of Expo 2011 XI'AN has a positive effects on Xi'an reduce ED.( 4) The mechanism of the Expo influence on the urban EF should be:the eco-city goal-International bid competition-International bid win-more ecological construction and environmental governance practices-the reduction of EF.
