Gated communities with gate and walls and privatized public spaces represent a form of postmodern urbanism. It is not only the outcome of urban social-economic development, but also giving rise to significant effects on all facets of urban life, such as society economy, polity and culture etc.The rapid growth and spreading of such communities in many regions of the world, has triggered a widespread discussion about the relations between social and urban development since the 1990s'.However,relevant studies in China are very little and the local authorities have paid little attentions to the phenomenon.Based on a summary of the foreign studies, this paper firstly analyses the developing phase and the mechanisms of gated communities, and then explores the reflections on the urban spaces and how the western countries govern it.And finally, the author brings forward that the public government needs to become stronger and more democratic to induct the sustainable development of gated communities, and at the same time to call on the supporting and cultivating from the civil society.
