Abstract

This paper reviews the progress of the study on the conception and the assessment method of accessibility. Because a complex highway network may be abstracted as a graph in the topological sense, a better indicator is brought forward which is the sum of the travel time through the minimum distance linked one node with all other ones. It is thus a measure of the accessibility of the entire network. It is important to regional planning to find an effective approach to properly assess the structure of highway network. This study gives a new definition of accessibility that is absolute and relative indicators. Taking Jiangsu as an example, this paper analyses the highway network evolvement, which lead to the change of the spatial distribution of accessibility in the province since 1993. Compared with cities in North Jiangsu and South Jiangsu, the improvement of the nodal accessibility in the major cities in Middle Jiangsu is more obvious in the initial stage of the highway development program. Apparently, the large-scale of the highway construction will bring about not only substantial improvements in accessibility across the whole province but more balanced development in the spatial sense. The principal aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of the highway network on accessibility in Jiangsu, by reducing time distance between places and modifying their relative location. The proper proposals are put forward which aim at solving the existing questions in the highway network structure.
